Job Description

The Mud Engineer (Drilling Fluids Engineer) is responsible for designing, monitoring, and maintaining the drilling fluid system to ensure optimal wellbore conditions throughout all drilling phases. This specialized role requires deep technical knowledge of fluid chemistry, rheology, and filtration behavior, combined with a strong HSE focus in managing chemical handling on the rig.

Responsibilities

Drilling Fluid Management

  • Design, prepare, and maintain drilling fluid programs for all well sections.
  • Conduct real-time fluid monitoring, analysis, and treatment adjustments on the rig.
  • Test drilling fluid properties daily (density, rheology, filtration, pH, solids content).
  • Manage bulk chemical inventory, mixing, and fluid system efficiency.

Technical Support & Reporting

  • Provide technical support to the Drilling Engineer on fluid-related wellbore stability issues.
  • Prepare daily drilling fluid reports and end-of-well fluid summaries.
  • Troubleshoot fluid-related drilling problems (loss circulation, differentially stuck pipe, etc.).

HSE & Chemical Handling

  • Ensure all chemical handling complies with COSHH, MSDS, and offshore chemical management procedures.
  • Maintain correct chemical segregation and storage on the mud boat and rig.
  • Participate in HSE drills and environmental compliance programs.
Requirements
  • BSc in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 6 years of drilling fluids engineering experience offshore.
  • IADC Rig Pass certification (mandatory).
  • OPITO Drilling Fluids / Mud Engineering certificate (preferred).
  • IWCF Level 2 awareness (preferred).
  • Experience with water-based, oil-based, and synthetic-based mud systems.
  • Strong chemical knowledge and proficiency in fluid laboratory analysis.
